Sofia
Bilozor is a singer/musician from Winnipeg, Manitoba. She plays
the bandura, guitar, piano and several percussive instruments.
Sofia won the title of "Canada's National Ukrainian Festival
Idol" from Dauphin's National Ukrainian Festival held August
2005. Since then she has played at a steady barrage of weddings,
pubs and lounges. Currently her full length album "Enchanting
Melodies" released as of August 2006 and is now available
in Winnipeg, Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary and online. Her talents
developed through a diverse musical background and the influence
from a wide variety of styles that rage from classical and jazz
to exotic flamenco music from Spain. Sofia has a fresh sound infusing
Ukrainian folk songs with Spanish flamenco music. Her songs are
soulful and passionate and will catch the attention of any song
lover!
Sofia
has performed with many groups including:
O. Koshetz Choir
(95-98), Zoloti Struny(95-present)-many
highlighs including playing bandura with the Winnipeg Symphony
Orchestra, Dauphins National Ukrainian Festival and playing at
special events including the unveiling of a stamp for famous sculpture/artist
Leo Mol. She has also sung with vocal trio Lyra
(95-05) at such events as Folklorama(festival to celebrate all
nations), Lyric Theatre, Dickinson North Dakota Ukrainian Festival,
several CYC and KYK events and even a special dinner for former
Lieutenant Governor Peter Lieba. She currently sings with Melos
Choir (94-present) whom has peformed with Hoosli
Men's Choir. Sofia has also performed in Spanish with Bolero
Dance theatre(04-05).
Sofia
made a national television appearance on Canadian Idol 2004. She
was told by Zack Werner, one of the celebrity judges, "if
we ever had Ukrainian Idol we will call you for sure?" Alas
she did not make it all the way but sang a traditional Ukrainian
folk piece and the judges were wow'd by the passion and power
in her voice. It was a great experience and the celebrity judges
were very impressed. Who knew Zack would be right about being
Ukrainian Idol!
Sofia
is accompanied by gifted musicians Duncan McGregor-flamenco guitar,
Eric Leblanc - percussion, Will Kaye - violin, Liana Stecky -
bandura, Rosemarie Muzyka - accordion, Nathan Mandziuk - accordion
and guest appearances by Nyk Bielak - bass guitar.
Besides
music, she has been an active member of CYMK - a ukrainian canadian
youth group involved in promoting leadership, religion and culture
and has served on all levels of executives, local, provincial
and also held the positiion of National Vice-President (03-05).
Sofia
attended the University of Manitoba 1995-1998 studying sciences.
She later graduated with a pharmacy technician degree from Winnipeg
Technical College in 2000 and is currently working in retail pharmacy.
Through her employment she is also a certifed Diabetes Meter Technician.
In her spare time Sofia likes to travel, listen to music, teach
guitar/bandura or is at the gym.
